I hope you will find the resources on this list helpful as well as challenging. Each suggestion has been sent to me by trusted friends and colleagues in ministry. Please note that while many of these resources have been helpful to the Knox Session in our past year’s study of racism, these resources do not constitute an approved list from Knox Church. I am sharing them as a list of resources that have been personally helpful to me. As always, I welcome conversation with you as you explore these recommendations.
List for Adults:
White Fragility: Why It’s So Difficult for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo
“The Case for Reparations” by TaNehisi Coates in The Atlantic, 2014
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander
Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America by Jennifer Harvey
I especially recommend the sermons by Rev. Floretta Barbee Watkins in “Tuesday Worship” and by Dr. Brian Blount in “Wednesday Worship,” and “NEXT Church Update and Testimony 2” (starting at 20:11) which features Cincinnati clergy Rev. Damon Lynch III and Rabbi Miriam Terlinchamp.
I also recommend the sermon preached at Third Presbyterian Church on May 31, 2020, with the title “Outcry.” The sermon is posted on the Third Presbyterian Church Facebook page.
