The evening will include dinner at 6:00pm, with the lecture beginning at 6:30pm. Dinner is $10 for adults, $5 for children age 3-12, and free for children 2 and under. Please pay at the door.
From Dr. Mayfield: In our world of religious diversity, it is tempting to rely on a good-bad, insider-outsider narrative about our Christian tradition and other religious traditions. We might describe ourselves as "chosen" or "beloved." But what do these self-designations then say about Judaism and Islam? Today's world is religiously plural; our neighbors are not only Pentecostal and Baptist; they are Hindu and Muslim, Buddhist and Jew. How can our sacred scriptures help us think about issues such as religious pluralism and chosenness? This lecture focuses on the book Genesis, a book that is typically read to follow the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. However, we attend to two "other brothers" from Genesis as a way to pay attention to those outside of the dominant story."
