About Knox Preschool
Knox
Preschool is a community outreach of the Knox Presbyterian Church.
KPS serves young children age 27 months through 5 years of age.
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Knox Preschool is to provide a warm,
supportive environment in which each child is inspired to fully
develop his/her potential within a framework of respect,
responsibility. This environment is provided through caring and
educated teachers who implement a developmental approach that
encourages parent involvement.
The
doors to Knox Preschool opened in 1956. The school began as a
parent co-operative, meaning parents were required to assist
teachers in the classroom.
ENROLLMENT
Currently, there are over 100 children ranging in age from 27 months
to five years enrolled in the program. Children attend on a part
day/part week basis with schedules varying depending on the needs of
each family. The school is in session from September through May.
Many children currently at Knox Preschool are the third or fourth
children in a family to attend.
STAFF
Knox’s lead
teachers are college graduates in early childhood or a related field
and all staff are certified in first aid/CPR. Knox’s co-directors
are Laura Johnson and Marie George. After attending Kent State,
Laura accumulated 12 years of management experience and excellent
organizational and communication skills. Marie has a degree in
Early Childhood Education from the University of Cincinnati and over
20 years of teaching experience, 10 of which were at Knox.
The teaching
staff consists of five Lead Teachers and five assistant teachers.
PROGRAM
The Preschool provides a
success-oriented, child-initiated environment in which children are
encouraged to explore, ask questions, make choices, develop respect,
and to grow in self-confidence. The program emphasizes the
individuality of each child and is designed to ensure that the
social, emotional, intellectual and physical learning process is
both challenging and fun.
On any given day at Knox, you can see
children painting, cutting, and exploring their classrooms while
other children are climbing, balancing, and playing on our outside
or indoor playgrounds. Each classroom provides a print-rich
environment to support the children’s abilities in both spoken and
written language. Children learn by doing and the teachers actively
facilitate communication and conflict resolution between children.
Knox Preschool has a long-standing
tradition of excellence in the field of Early Childhood Education
and is proud to be one of the few preschools in Cincinnati to be
accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young
Children.
Interested families are encouraged to
contact the Preschool co-directors, Laura Johnson or Marie George,
at 321-9228 Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. New
families are encouraged to arrange a visit to the Preschool during
school hours

Play is Important!
Play is absolutely essential to children. Play
provides many opportunities for children to learn and
grow physically, cognitively and socially. What a child learns
while playing is the basis for what they will later learn in school.
Play allows children to explore, create, experiment
with new ideas, and try out what they have learned. During play a
child can practice communication skills while solving problems.
They learn thinking skills by trying new things in
playtime. Solving problems helps children with their thinking
skills and makes them feel good about themselves.
Being able to talk about what they see and how they
feel increases their self-image as well as their language skills.
Children learn to socialize by playing with others.
The benefits are practically immeasurable in terms of learning to
cooperate, forming friendships and sharing with other children.
These skills are important when they go to school.
